We have always believed that overweight people eat a lot more than those who are lean. Although scientific evidence suggests that the main cause (not the only one) of excess weight is overeating, there are plenty of examples of lean individuals who eat large amounts of food while there are obese people who eat little and exercise every day.
I have heard, not infrequently, in my practice: A 39 year old woman, for example, is frustrated because she 'does it all correctly but doctor, I cannot lose these 10 pounds', or 'Doctor, I cannot go below 160 pounds no matter what I do'. We have all heard about 'A slow metabolism', or 'After a certain age we cannot get thin'. We find that many patients identify themselves as 'emotional eaters', or that Obesity is in the genes, in the hormones of food, in overtraining, in not sleeping enough hours, in intolerances to gluten and dairy, or in the obesogenic effect of pregnancy and postpartum states. The list goes on.
All these assumptions carry validity, to some degree. Their most important message, and the one that characterizes our "Age Management Diet', is that weight loss is not only diet and exercise. It requires a much more complex approach because our wiring is complex, and keeping a normal weight has been proven to be a challenging and frustrating problem for many millions of human beings.
Although some patients succeed at losing weight and keeping it off through diet and exercise, what more commonly happens is that they get stuck and discouraged along the way, they gain all the weight back (often more),and after the great sacrifice they made on shedding those pounds, repeat the unhealthy cycles of yo-yo dieting or, worse still, they throw in the towel and with it they lose a greater quality of living because they feel tired of trying unsuccessfully.
It is for all these reasons that The Miami-Institute's Age Management Diet will look at all aspects of your weight related goals with a holistic perspective. It is up to you, how in depth you want us to delve into the problem. First we must always address Life Style issues: We recommend a well-balanced diet and help you curb your appetite using natural and/or prescription medications. We recommend exercise that is appropriate for you, suggest sleep hygiene methods, and analyze traveling, eating-out habits and preferences. We assess and balance your hormonal status that affects your weight loss: sex hormones such as estrogen or testosterone, thyroid, leptin and others. We like to assess your brain chemistry, which is very relevant to eating habits. We recommend evaluating toxin burden, as recent scientific research explains that environmental toxins such as PCB may be the culprit when losing weight is very difficult. We offer behavioral therapy, when it is indicated. Food intolerances can be evaluated at any point.
Our main interest is your health, your success, and your quality of life. These goals drive our program, and nourish our commitment to you.
